Frequently Asked Questions
The wireless biosensor monitors the skin temperature on the forehead in real time, and transmits that information to a receiver, which forwards the information into our cloud-based server. That receiver can be in a handheld or in a fixed Internet connected enclosure. When the temperature of an individualexceeds a preset level, alerts are automatically sent to appropriate personnel. All data are permanently stored on cloud-based server for easy retrieval and analysis. The entire system is wireless and operates in the background.
Our biosensor can be used in any headgear, provided this headgear fulfills the following conditions:
- Provides a spot for the biosensor sensor patch to be attached to the headgear where it has a direct
or very close contact with a forehead skin. - Sits tightly on the head.
- Provides sufficient insulation from the outside elements.
Anywhere a suitable headgear is used.
- Industrial environments, where hard hats are used. Some examples are construction, oil and gas,
steel mills, other metal manufacturing, mines, coal processing facilities and other places where
environmental conditions deem it necessary. - Athletics, such as football, lacrosse, ice hockey and baseball.
- Law enforcement and firefighting in the instances where helmets are worn.
No. Headbands usually do not sit tight enough on the head to provide a correct contact of the sensor with the forehead. In addition the headband soaks up the sweat and evaporation skews the temperature measurements.
Yes, however, mounting in helmets of individual manufacturers may differ. Please contact us regarding proper mounting in a particular helmet.
Currently all of our new generation biosensors include GE thermistor (for temperature) and a presence sensor (to recognize whether the head gear is on the head). We also offer a biosensor that includes a shock sensor together with the thermistor and presence sensors. The previous generation included only a thermistor. All biosensors communicate wirelessly.
No. Our biosensors act as an early warning device to alert users about changes in temperature prior to the onset of heat related symptoms. Forehead skin temperature is a leading indicator of such issues and is therefore more appropriate than core temperature.
It is up to 250 meters (273 yards) in free air. The distance depends on what device is used for data capture (handheld or fixed device) and the environment.
No. You also have an option of a fixed unit, that can be attached at the site and data can be accessed from any Internet browser. The fixed unit can be connected either over GPRS (cell networks) or Ethernet (depending on the networking capability on your site). In the near future iPhone and Android apps will be released.

Yes, we use distributors and offer referral fees. Call us for details!
You can buy them from us or from an authorized distributor. Please contact us for details.
The system is not designed to be implemented for a single user at this time. If you are interested in having the HOT system deployed at your team or facility, please contact us and we will provide all the necessary details.
Injuries in the workplace or on the sports field can result from a variety of different causes. The HOT system is not a medical device, or diagnostic tool, but it automatically monitorsa person’s temperature and other biometrics and provides alerts when a certain condition arises. All data is stored in a cloud server for future analysis and can be accessed over the Internet. In practice, the HOT system will alert the sideline staff or a safety officer of a person’s increasing temperature or helmet impact. This, together with appropriate supervision and procedures can help the staff identify who requires more detailed attention (temperature check, cooling, concussion checklist,…).
There is no on/off switch and alerts are NOT automatically reset. To increase safety, the biosensors are always ON and monitoring while being worn. The Hothead platform will continue to alert the monitoring personnel of a temperature issue or helmet impact until intervention is initiated. To clear an alert, Hothead requires the monitoring personnel (trainer, coach, safety officer…) to enter what action steps were taken on behalf of the student athlete or an employee. All data is automatically stored for analysis by the coaching staff, safety and/or medical professionals.
The battery is designed to last up to three years under normal conditions. The biosensors enter into a battery saving mode when the helmet is removed. This ensures a longer battery life. When the Annual Service Contract is purchased, we replace all biosensors and upgrade all software changes free of charge for the duration of the contract.
The biosensor sends the players temperature reading every 15 seconds and all the temperature data from every player wearing their helmet is stored. Shock event data is stored when the sensor receives an impact greater than 60G’s. The team data, by player, is stored including personal contact information and records of each alert clearing intervention. All data is protected by passwords so that only authorized personnel has access to this data.
Cloud computing is a very secure way to store data while making it available for authorized personnel to view. The data is available for analysis now and even years into the future if the need arises. It eliminates local data storage, need for local servers and other infrastructure. Cloud computing heavily utilizes the Internet and this allows for users to access all applications and data through a browser.
Thousands.
Yes, the software easily allows you to reassign the biosensor to a different helmet and player.
No, the biosensors are battery powered.
No, this device is not intended to diagnose any condition. The system simply notifies the proper personnel that a condition may exist that needs their attention.
Not yet, however, we are in process of obtaining this certification. Certified biosensors should be available in Spring 2012.
Yes, the HOT system is certified for use in almost all countries. If you have questions regarding a particular country in the world, please contact us to confirm the availability.
123 F or 50.5 C.
Not yet, however, we planning to release smart phone capable system next year. Stay tuned!
