Hothead Technologies Wins Popular Science “Best Of What’s New” Award for 2009

Hothead Technologies, makers of the H.O.T. System; a wireless sensing device that monitors body temperature of football players from inside their helmet, as well as headband applications for observing personnel in industrial and governmental industries, are celebrating their first technology award from one of the country’s most well-known science publications, Popular Science. The Best of What’s New Award was presented to Hothead Technologies in the category of Health.

“For 22 years, Popular Science has honored the innovations that surprise and amaze us − those that make a positive impact on our world today and challenge our views of what’s possible in the future.” said Mark Jannot, Editor-in-Chief of Popular Science. “The Best of What’s New Award is the magazine’s top honor, and the 100 winners − chosen from among thousands of entrants − represent the highest level of achievement in their fields.”

“We’re extremely proud of this award and we hope to continue our goal of protecting people in all walks of life with our H.O.T. System,” comments, founder and CEO Jay Buckalew.

Hothead Technologies started their vision of protecting football players three years ago, out of a tiny office located in Atlanta, Georgia with a few people but big ideas. Today the company has garnered the attention of major helmet manufacturers like Schutt Sports and Riddell who plan to include the system in their helmets in 2010. Division I football programs have engaged with Hothead to trial this new sensing technology. “We now have corporations and government departments like General Dynamics and the U.S. Army working with us to integrate the H.O.T. System into their technology and that speaks volumes as to how far we feel our system can go,” says Buckalew.

Keith Sutton, director of marketing and branding for Hothead Technologies says “Popular Science has really given us a boost as far as educating the masses about the silent attack of heat stroke. It’s created a significant buzz. Now people know there’s an answer to the ongoing problem of detecting above normal body temperature in individuals.” “We’ve even received requests to work with organizations internationally because groups found out about us through the Popular Science article. It’s the perfect fit with the other media that have shared our story like CNN, ABC, and the Discovery Channel,” comments Sutton.

The Hothead Technologies solution is gaining interest in various markets as companies are finding the H.O.T. system can aid them in protecting company personnel and even the general public. As Fire Fighting agencies, Government and Health Authorities in the U.S. and abroad have their own battles with heat illness; they are recognizing that this technology can be the ideal solution.
